Discover one of the most authentic cultural experiences around Nyungwe, where skilled pottery artisans continue a tradition that has been passed down through generations.
The indigenous pottery-making community, once living within the vicinity of Nyungwe, has long been recognized for its rich cultural heritage and remarkable craftsmanship. Historically, community members depended on the forest for their livelihood through hunting, gathering wild fruits, and collecting natural resources.
As part of ongoing conservation efforts to protect the unique biodiversity of Nyungwe, these communities were resettled in designated villages outside the forest. This transition created new opportunities while helping preserve one of Africa’s most important tropical rainforests.
Today, pottery making has become the community’s primary source of income and a proud expression of their cultural identity. Using traditional techniques passed down through generations, local artisans transform natural clay into beautiful pots, bowls, decorative pieces, and other handcrafted items. Visitors have the opportunity to admire and purchase these unique creations directly from the makers, supporting local livelihoods while taking home a meaningful piece of Rwandan culture.
A visit to the pottery makers is more than a demonstration of craftsmanship—it is an immersive cultural encounter. Guests can observe every stage of the pottery-making process, from preparing the clay to shaping and finishing each piece by hand. As the artisans work, they often accompany their craft with traditional songs that gradually build into lively and captivating performances.
